Coming Home

We are heading home via Southwest Airlines on Monday, 10.22.07. Our plane lands at 8 p.m. This has been a great trip, one we'll be sure to think fondly of for a long time. Thanks for looking at our blog and following along. I plan to keep this website for future endeavors. See you back in Maryland!

Coronado Beach - Farewell

Mr. Plum relaxes in the balmy breeze (with us nearby, of course). The view of the Pacific Ocean was slightly obscured by smoke from this far away because of wind-driven wild fires from north of San Diego. We all enjoyed it anyway. I could live here, for sure... The water was very cold, but your feet got used to it quickly.

Final Days of Trip

10.21.07 - I walked on the beach alone and got these shots. The weather here is wonderful!

10.20.07 - We visited the San Diego Zoo this date, only I have no photos. We forgot to bring the camera! (It was bound to happen one of these times...) We bought a disposable camera for the zoo. We loved the Meercats! So cute!

Happy Birthday to Me

We made it to San Diego! We are staying at a Navy Lodge on North Island and it's quite beautiful! We recorded the historic event of me getting my feet wet for the very first time in the Pacific Ocean, on my 49th birthday. You can see the San Diego skyline in the background above.

Another Drive Down South

10.18.07 - Today we drove from Port Hueneme to North Island, San Diego area. It's just beautiful around here! The weather was very clear for this drive, so we got some good shots of the ocean. Just had to get photos of ourselves in front of this Malibu sign. Didn't see any celebrities here, but I can understand why they want to live here. Gorgeous miles of beaches.

Reagan Presidential Library

10.17.07 - We spent the afternoon at the Reagan Library. It sits high on a hill overlooking the Simi Valley. Just beautiful! It felt peaceful here. We saw the de-commissioned Air Force One. I really liked that. It reminded me of my dad (only he flew much smaller aircraft!) We are standing in front of the final resting place of Ronald Reagan.

Pacific Coast Sketch

I started this sketch on Sunday and finished last night. It's been hard to keep up with any sketching on this trip. We're going at a pace much faster than we do normally, so there's not much down time. We leave in an hour heading for San Diego.

Last Night with Paul & Denise

Mr. Plum gets to meet Paul and Denise, who were kind enough to let us take their picture with our purple bear friend! We had a blast with them. Bret and Paul both have a wacky sense of humor and I hardly stopped laughing the whole time we were together!

Giant Ape meets Mr.Plum

Mr. Plum gets a taste of Burbank by posing with King Kong at City Walk.

Universal Studios

10.16.07 - Today we rested up and later drove back into the Burbank area via US-101. The traffic here is just as bad as we've always heard it would be. I didn't like that part. We walked around Universal Studios "City Walk" - sort of like a mall with movie themes. We played the typical tourists here.

Just for Fun

Bret's foot next to a famous one. And in the 2nd photo, can you guess who this celebrity is? We saw him while standing in line for Jay Leno. Not a great photo so I'll give a little hint. He played in a 60's rock group which also had a TV show.

Dinner with Friends

We ended our very exciting Hollywood-express day having dinner with our "tour-guide", Bret's college buddy, Paul Fleck and his lovely wife Denise. They are such a fun couple! This restaurant, called The Castaway, sits high on a hill overlooking the entire LA area. It was beautiful even with the fog. (We can't seem to shake the foggy weather - we keep bringing it with us.) We tried to get a shot of the famous Hollywood sign, but it didn't turn out very well.

The Tonight Show

Bret's friend, Paul Fleck, drove us all around the LA area for a high-speed overview tour of all the sights. He completely surprised us by handing us tickets for a taping of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. We had to wait in line for awhile with lots of other folks. We met this lovely lady, Glozell, who is trying to get into the Guiness Book of World Records for the most number of times being in the audience of the Tonight Show. I think she said this was her 271st time. We loved being in the taping. But we didn't end up seeing ourselves on camera, as we had to sit in the back row. It was very interesting having this quintessential Hollywood experience. Thanks, Paul! (FYI - Glozell has her own blog and she posted us on hers, too! Here's her link: http://glozelllovesjayleno.blogspot.com/

Burbank

Posing in Beautiful Downtown Burbank (except on 10.15.07 it was cold, foggy and not quite as beautiful as it could be.)

Seals on the Coast

We stopped to see dozens of Elephant Seals sleeping on the beach. We were told by one of the volunteers who watch them that this group had been swimming for months and now it was their rest time. At first I was afraid they were all dead, but we could see them breathing, scratching their heads, and climbing on one another to get warm. They were so cute!

Left Monterey - Heading to LA

We drove down the Pacific Coast Highway to see the spectacular scenery on our way south. We only saw a little of these beautiful coastal views. There was a huge fog bank covering the coast the whole way down, so we only got to see snippets. The top picture is the fog swirling up over the road. The ocean looked like one big tea kettle of boiling water. It was errie and beautiful all at once.

17-Mile Drive in Monterey

We took the scenic 17-mile drive in Monterey, just in time for sunset. Bret got this shot just as the sun was making its last hurrah. I love the rugged coastline.

Day 13 - Drive to Monterey

We arrived at the Navy Lodge in Monterey on Saturday, Oct. 13th. (Still no real access to the Internet. I had to wait until we got to LA for this post.) Here's Mr. Plum and his first taste of Halloween - posing with Mr. Pumpkin Man!

Day 12 - Relaxation Time

Okay - now we are really exhausted, so we both decided to have a day off from touring and such. We enjoyed a rainy day by staying inside. Bret did the laundry and Sheryl worked on this sketch of leaves found in Yosemite. Tomorrow we leave for Monterey, CA. Don't know where we will find an Internet connection there! We will keep trying.

10.11.07 - Anniversary Night

We celebrated anniversary #10 in San Francisco at the Ruth's Chris Steak House on Van Ness Ave. It was an adventure getting there. The city is about 40 miles north from where we are staying in Mountain View, CA. We took the BART Train into the city (Bay Area Rapid Transit). This is not for the faint of heart. We won't do that again anytime soon...

October 10, 2007

We left Groveland on Wednesday and visited with Bret's aunt and uncle, Guylene and Jim Hegarty. Had a nice lunch together and got to see their lovely home in Livermore, CA.

Where's Wireless?

Mr. Plum tried to send email, but we don't have wireless in our hotel. We've had to drive around the town of Mountain View, CA to find any signal we can. This post means "success at last."

Half Dome

Another gorgeous view through the trees. This mountain is called Half Dome.

Bridalveil Falls

Here we are at the beginning of the trail leading up to see Bridalveil Falls. The top view is Bridalveil Falls where the water still flows, but not like it usually does when there's been more rain.

Day 9 - Inside Yosemite

We spent today in Yosemite National Park. All I can say is - it's beautiful! Even with the drought they've been having here, the scenery is indescribable. This is a view of Yosemite Falls without the waterfall. There wasn't enough snow or rain this past winter and the falls have temporarily dried up. Too bad for us - but maybe this photo will be worth big bucks one day!

A Taste of Yosemite

Today we drove into the Hetch Hetchy side of Yosemite. This is apparently a little-used entrance into the Park. We saw this reservoir which we learned supplies the water to 2.4 million people in the San Francisco area. This is just a little snippet of what we are told we will see tomorrow when we go to the more popular sites around Yosemite. Oh boy!

Dinner with Family

We got to Groveland at around 6 p.m. and we all went out to dinner at the Pine Mountain Lake Country Club. Yummy food! Above are Bret's Uncle Bob, Becky's husband Jim, the two stooges, and Becky, Bret's cousin. We saw many deer, especially young ones, within a few feet of the car -deer were everywhere! We can hear horses nearby. This is a mountainous region, but I'm not sure of the elevation...maybe around 2,000 feet.

Nice Car - Scary Bear

Mr. Plum, who is tired of travel at this point, tries to stop us from going anywhere in the rental car. It took some convincing that Bret's driving is fine and he would be safe, and he calmed down and got comfy in the brand new Dodge Caliber. Nice deal on the rental!

More Day 7 - Car Travel Begins

Before we headed to Oakland Airport to get our rental car, Mr. Plum had to be prodded awake for our trip to Groveland, CA. What is his problem?

Back on the Train (Days 5, 6 & 7)

We said our goodbyes to Ron and Lauri around 4 p.m. Oct. 5th and headed for California. This was the longest leg of our train trip and probably the most scenic (though its a toss-up with the scenery in Colorado. We traveled through Utah (which was mostly desert and plains), Nevada, and the High Sierras, which were covered with recent snowfall. We also saw Donner's Pass. We've learned just how hard it is to take good pictures through a train window. I will have to look thru our photos and see which ones would be worth posting. Keeping up with this blog is proving to be a challenge as we don't always have Internet access every place we stop. I am writing this from a hotel in Oakland, California which does have wireless. So be patient and keep checking back here for more. You never know what you may find! We leave here later this morning and head to Bret's cousin's home in Groveland, CA. Mr. Plum is plum wore out!

The Moose

At the very top of Grand Mesa we spotted this moose - he looked like he was posing for us. This is my first moose sighting ever. Mr. Plum didn't get to see it. Oh well!

Day 5- Last Day in CO

In the early afternoon before we had to get back on the train, Ron drove us to the top of the Grand Mesa, elevation 10,500 feet. The aspens were changing into this lovely yellow color and you could see for miles. Felt like being on top of the world.

Days 3 and 4: Colorado

Introducing Mr. Plum, who accompanied us on our train ride. He wanted to see the grand scenery so he hitched a ride with us.

We arrived in Colorado Oct. 3rd and were greeted by Ron and Lauri Miller at the Grand Junction Station.

Lauri and I have known each other since 1967, having grown up next door to each other in Glen Burnie, MD. Ron and Lauri are being excellent hosts, showing us God's glorious creation in the western sections of the state. They live in a little town called Parachute, which is near Aspen. The mountains with the fall colors are spectacular. No picture could do it justice.

Today Ron drove us up a winding mountain road at elevations of around 8,000 feet. We found some fossils in the rocky slate. Could they have been formed during the Great Flood? I wonder...

Fun with Kristy

We had a nice, but short time with Kristy walking around Chicago and having lunch at the Cosi Cafe. Kristy and family just moved back to the Chicago area a few months ago, having lived in Scotland for many years. It was so nice to reconnect even for a short time.

Weird Hairdos

They don't call Chicago "The Windy City" for nothing - we're being brave posting this photo of us underneath the Sears Tower basically because we have no pride! We had a 5-hour layover between trains in Chicago and walked around with my friend, Kristy Cosden, who came into town to meet us.

Days 1 and 2: From DC to Chicago

We made it to the train in time, thanks to Sarah! Here's a shot of us inside our "sleeper car" (which is more like a closet). I think they should have called it a "dozer car" because we got very little sleep. Between the train whistle noises and the constant jostling, sleep was hard to come by. I'll tell you more about the train later.

Welcome to our travel blog!

This is the place to find future photos and stories of our travels over the next several weeks. We'll probably have something posted by the end of the week or sooner.
